Background / Scenario

In this activity you will register several IoT devices with the IoT server. You will monitor the IoT devices through the IoT server. You will also configure tethering between a smartphone and a laptop. Tethering permits the laptop to use the cellular data connection of a smartphone to access the internet.

Instructions

Part 1: Register Devices to the Registration Server

Step 1: Access the IoT devices at the Home Gateway server.

a. Click theTablet icon to open the Tablet configuration window.

b. Click the IoT Monitor in the Desktop tab.

c. Use the default settings and click Login. A list of IoT devices registered to the Home Gateway server is displayed.

Step 2: Access the IoT Server at home.com.

In this step, you will register the existing IoT devices to a remote IoT server at home.com.

a. Click the Web Browsericon in the Desktop tab. Navigate to home.com in the URL box and then click Go.

b. Enter username homeand password home when prompted.

c. Notice in the IoT Server � Deviceswindow there are no IoT devices listed. This is because all the IoT devices are currently registered with Home Gateway as the IoT Server.

d. You can leave Tabletwhile the IoT devices populate in the next Step.

Step 3: Register IoT devices to the IoT Server at home.com

a. To configure the ceiling fan to register with the new registration server, click Fanto open the device configuration window.

b. Click the Configtab. Change the IoT Server type from Home Gateway to Remote Server. Enter home.com as the Server Address. Enter home as the username and home as the password. Click Connect to continue.

c. Close the Fanwindow.

d. Configure the Lampand the Door to register with the IoT Server in the same way.

Step 4: Verify that the IoT devices are registered to the IoT server at home.com.

a. Access the IoT Server through the web browser of the wireless Tablet using the home.comcredentials.

b. The three IoT devices, FanLamp, and Doorshould now be registered with the IoT server at home.com. All three should have entries in the IoT Server - Devices window.

Note: If any devices show an offline status, return to the device registration server configuration an click refresh.

c. Close Tabletwindow.

Part 2: Connect a Smartphone to a Laptop Using Cellular Tethering

Step 1: Enable Bluetooth on the Laptop.

a. Click the Laptop icon to open the configuration window.

b. Click the Config tab.

c. In the left pane, click Bluetooth.

d. Click Onfor the Port Status to enable Bluetooth.

Step 2: Enable Bluetooth on the Smartphone.

a. Click the Smartphoneicon to open the configuration window.

b. Verify that the Smartphoneis connected to the 3G/4G Cell1 network.

c. Click DHCP Refreshto ensure you have a valid IP address.

d. In the Global Settings, set Bluetooth to Onto enable Cellular Tethering.

e. In the left pane, click Bluetooth.

f. Click Onfor the Port Status to enable Bluetooth.

Step 3: Connect the Smartphone to the Laptop.

a. In the Smartphone, click Config.

b. In the left pane, click Bluetooth.

c. Click Discover.

d. Select Laptopin the list of Discoverable devices.

e. Click Pair. If a popup window appears that asks for permission to pair, approve the connection. Now the status of the connection should have changed to Paired, Connected.

f. Return to Laptopand open the configuration window for Bluetooth.

g. Select the Smartphonefrom the list of discovered devices and click Tether.

Step 4: Verify connectivity through the cellular network.

a. To test connectivity, open the Command Prompt from the Laptopdesktop and ping home.com.

C:\> ping home.com

Ping replies indicate that the laptop, which is only connected to the cellular data network through the Smartphone, can connect to internet destinations.

b. You can also navigate home.comand log into the IoT server and view the list of registered IoT devices from Home.
